I would like to raise the RPS on my montauk. I would be nice to sit while traveling through long no wake zones or on flat water without having to look to the side of the console. Does anyone have any experience with this? If so can you share what you believe to be the best height. I plan to make the mounts from mahogany and pattern them to the existing mounts.

Assuming you have original mahagonny RPS I would be hesitant to tamper with the deck if all seems ok. Im not telling you to get a thick cushion either but I think with a little inovation I would look to raise the seat at the seat and not at the base (or build detachable seat for a cushion that sits atop current position. That way you are not changing the original set up and still obtaining desired effect.

Cpt.

Thanks for the reply. I did a search and found tons of info on the seat mod. I have a lot of reading to do!

A number of Boston Whaler owners who happen to be 6-foot 4-inches tall have raised both their Reversible Pilot Seat (RPS) and their console. One method to do this is to cut some teak planks into the desired shape and laminate them together to the desired amount of rise.

I have heard a legend that designer Bob Dougherty was not unsually tall, and this affected the height of the seat and console that he designed.

Also, keeping the seat and console at reasonable heights is better for the boat's center of gravity.

I think I have some photographs of these details. If I find them I will post them.
