I'm planning to replace the wooden side console and benches with a center console (cooler seat in front and pedestal seats in back). I'd gladly use a BW Montauk CC if they weren't so extremely costly.

My question is how to prevent water that might be in the bilge tunnel from coming up inside the console. I don't see any way to seal off the tunnel to prevent this since rigging and wiring must utilize the tunnel. I'd really like to keep the bottom of the console dry for storage. Has anyone figured this out? Does the Montauk have the same problem?

Vincent,

The Montauk center console has a shelf built into the bottom that seals it, providing dry storage for you. I did something very similar when I converted my Newport to a Newtauk. Like the setup much better.

Good luck...

Keep you tunnel semi dry and no problem.

Pedestal seats will not work. They will rip out, hence why you never see them in 17's.

Thanks for the advice. Kinda surprised to hear that pedestal seats rip out in the 17's. I thought the wood under the floor was pretty substantial. You certainly need to avoid the tunnel!!! Come to think of it, I don't remember seeing a pedestal seat on a 17'. I could be almost as happy with a 'swing back seat over a gas tank' arrangement.

I'm not real clear how the Montauk console shelf seals the bottom. Maybe the shelf is compartmented with other access hatches to get to the tunnel opening. I'm having trouble picturing this. I can see a shelf being cleated to the console side walls a few inches off the floor. I might visit my local 'stealership' and take a good look inside the console. I want a dry, secure storage space as large as possible.
