I'm looking at an 84 Montauk 17' tomorrow. It sounds like a good deal but apparently it has been refinished. New decals and a few other things. He claims he purchased the basic hull new and has had all the accesories build or purchased oem. It sounds like it could be a good buy but we have lots of BW knock offs up here. Any thoughts?

Look at the title, hull numbers, and characteristics like the bow chock. If you still can't tell, get photos of the smirk and transom shape and compare them to a Whaler you know is a Whaler. That should be enough to establish what you're looking at. Also find out why it was refinished. A paint job could be hiding trouble. Treat this purchase as you would a used car. Buyer beware.

Since he bought the hull new, ask him to see the original papers and compare the hull number. In addition to the other responses you've gotten in the other posts.

Sorry about multiple posts. Got carried away.I have never seen a message board so active and effective.

I looked at the boat today, I believe it is an authentic whaler but the cosmetics that have been performed have scared me off. Too much stuff hidden by new paint. Not enough oem parts. Thanks all you have been extremely helpful. J
