What are the procedures that I can try to get rid of the bow rail rattles on my 1969 Sakonnet? The rattles occur at the point where the rails pass through the horizontal bracket. I appreciate your collective experience.

I recently purchased a 1978 Montauk 17 that needs some restoration, and it has the same problem of the rail rattling in the same places as you have mentioned. It chatters regardless of the speed. Any help would be appreciated!

Untill you decide what to fill the gap with, flat tooth picks will stop [the rattle]. I pulled [two] pieces of 40-lb [fishing line] through at the bottom of the hole.

There are several techniques to stop the rattle including replacing the screws with rivets or retapping them and adding 3M4200 for a better purchase.

Doing a search (under New Topic) on loose rails will give you many articles to review.

I drilled out the holes and replaced the original screws with stainless steel rivets (don't use typical aluminum rivets as they will eventually loosen up). No rattles ever since.

Call Fred at CMI Marine 781-337-0733, and get new screws and nylon lock washers.
