I have a version of a center console that has a built in electronics box on the top. It's in a 1991, 19' Outrage.
The box has a hindged, plexiglass door that slides under the top of the box when it's opened. It is guided by a stainless rod, centered inside the top of the box. It is supported on each side by the plastic front cover of the box.

The problem is that the cover constantly gets dislodged, both when open (slid back), and when closed.

Does anyone have experience with this type of arrangement? I need some ideas?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
I have the same console arrangement on my '93 OR 17, and it has not been a problem at all. When closed, it latches easily and never moves. When open, it rattles a bit unless you push down slightly on the latch button and then slide it further in so the latch is slightly under the top edge of the console and the friction fit keeps it from rattling.

If yours is not stable, I would guess that it has something to do with the attachment of the front plastic face cover to the plastic sliding strip that rides on the stainless rod. There is a piano hinge along the top of the front cover that could be getting loose from its attachments to either the front cover or the guide strip. The only other places that I can see as potential problems are the attachment points of the stainless rod to the console, or the attachment of the stainless guide onto the sliding strip. 1st check should be the attachment points of the stainless rod itself, as one loose end of the rod would easily allow dislodging of the cover.

Mike,

My rod is only attached on the bow side of the inside of the console. The stern end is free standing. I am able to completely remove the cover by carefully sliding it out and under the upper lip of the plastic cover. Does that sound like your situation? I find that front plastic cover was supporsed to create a guide for the cover, and prevent it from flopping around the guide rod. This arrangement doesn't seem to work well.

What am I missing? I think I might be missing something that prevent the thing from sliding out altogether.

I didn't have a functional lock until recently, maybe that will help.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom: Did all of the 91 Outrages have that console with the electronics box? I like that setup with the integrated rod holders. Found one such boat, but it sold quickly and I missed it.

Chesa,

I believe that in 91 they produced the model I have as well as the Outrage II with the flip forward console. The console I have seems to have been designed for the 17' Outrage (made from 1991-1995), and the Rebock company seems to have decided to use it on the 19s at that point too.

One nice thing about this console is that it has a large port side door, much bigger than on earlier models. In my mind, the juries still out on the electronics box. If I can't get this cover to work better, it will simply be a pain in the butt. Also, since the cover slides up inside the box, it prevents you from using a surface mounted compass.

Regards,
Tom

Tom: They also put your console in the bigger whalers in 1992. Jack "whalerdude" Martin has a '92 22' Outrage with that console in it.

Hadn't thought about the inability to handle a surface mounted compass. However, the bigger side door and the integrated rod holders and seat back are nice. Most of all, I like the electronics box -- assuming it will work. Thinking that there ought to be some better aftermarket hardware / hinges that might work better, Tom. I hope you figure it out. Jack might be able to provide some insight from his boat.

Tom, your problem is that the rod should slide into a tube on top of the plexiglass door. I had to take mine out to install a fishfinder. You have to reach in and pull down slightly on the rod and slide it into that tube. I have a 1992 17ft Outrage. Good luck BK

Tom-
I have same plexi hinged door on console of my 1991 Outrage 19. No problems with it at all. Yours must be out of alignment or something.

How so? I have fishfinder, GPS, and VHF radio mounted on top of center console using screws that are no longer than necessary for the job. The plexi door does not rub against any of these screws or associated wiring. Below is link to a pic of console taken in Aug 02 BEFORE I installed GPS and VHF. Dont have current pic of console.

Kevin,

I may have misspoken. You can't use the flush mounted compass because it would sit too deep to all you to slide the door open.

What prevents the door from sliding all the way out? Is there a stopper of some sort on teh guide rod?

I think the problem I have is that either the plastic frame isn't supporting the edges well enough, or I may be missing a part.

Tom
