Found some interesting information regarding owner's manuals for Yahama products. This was in Trailer Boats magazine, August 2003 issue, page 18.

According to the article Yahama recently hired a firm to reproduce all of its manuals. The firm is in the process of printing owner's manuals dating back nearly 20 years. Manuals can be ordered at yamahapubs.com. The manuals are also available at Yamaha dealerships nationwide. The manuals will be available electronically and online by the end of 2003.

This is a good move on the part of Yamaha. According to one of their authorized dealers they were forbidden by Yamaha to sell me one.

Maybe the real story was that Yamaha had none to sell--out of print?

P.S. --walked into my Mercury dealer and bought a shop manual for a 27-year old Mercury outboard. Dealer had it [I]in-stock[/i} and the price was fine: $35 for about 500-600 pages of illustrated shop manual, perfect bound, high quality printing and reproduction of all illustrations and photographs. It covered only a few models and only a few years--very detailed information, not boiler plate.

Some Yamaha owner's manuals for the more recent model years are already viewable on-line.

The owners manual for my 2001 225 OX66 Yamaha is online; it's one of the most sensible and practical uses for the internet I've seen, and is one handy setup. And the pages don't get greasy.

Yeah, but with online manuals you have to take your lap top out in the shop to use them!
