Anyone familiar with kits that will convert short shafts to long? My mechanic said that Bay Industies have sold them for years. I am considering it so that I can put my short Merc. 200 on a 22 outrage.

Theres an after market company in Ohio that makes all the conversion kits, they wanted $5 - $600 for a kit to extend a 2000 - 200 hp Evinrude freshwater, but I ended up getting the saltwater with 25".
Don't know how much for a Merc.
Forgot the name of the company.

Have you heard whether or not the kits are good?

I assume you mean convert a 20" long shaft to a 25" extra long. Andy Gere on this site has such a Mercury with this extension kit on it. Check with him. I believe Mercury makes the kit also, and I would get theirs, since a new driveshaft is required. Mercury's own 30" 225's are done using their own extension kit at the factory.

I have heard of Bay Industries and I think they make a good product. $600 or so is about right for the parts for this conversion.

Ihg, i'm not certain about the Mercs, but the extension for the OMC, Bomb engines is just a 5" extension on the exsisting shaft [ female into male at the bottom & male into female at the top ] , works great from what I understand.
Omc, Bomb also uses an extension instead of one solid shaft for their extension kit but costs like 3 times as much.

When you add the extension, is there a bolt or something that keeps the extension attached to the lower unit shaft? Seem like if there wasn't you could get into a situation when pulling the lower unit where the extensiotn repmains in the power head. Probably not a problem if everything is greased good. Not that I need one but I'm just interested.

Sal,
that's the one I heard about. I can't find the company though to research it further.

From what I have been able to learn, my '89 Merc 200 has a factory extension kit installed. The drive shaft is one piece, and comes out with the lower unit just as it would on a normal 25" shaft model. I'm not sure if the kit was dealer installed or factory installed, but it's the original power on this boat so I know it has been "extended" since new.
