my 15 striper has bottom paint on it that is in very bad condition. i am looking to put the interlux performance epoxy on it instead of bottom paint. does it take alot of work to apply it and if you leave it in brown or dirty water does it turn colors like white bottom paint does? I will keep it on a trailor or on the jet dock system and don't have to worry about marine growth. if you have used this stuff or seen it used please tell me the pros & cons of it.

thanks,

Also does the epoxy effect the speed of the boat or the weight of the boat.

Bottom paint is make to reject anything that try's to stick to it, like epoxy.

You may have to strip the bottom paint off the hull to get the epoxy to stick.

Whalerboy 14:
I would just repaint with plain old Interlux Bottomkote and not spend the added cost of an epoxy. Specialized paints are best used on larger boats which have a greater surface area while under (on plane or at displacement speeds).

Here are several reasons not to waste your money and time. First, Your boat does not sit in the water when not in use so the paint's sole purpose is wasted. Second, your boat's wetted surface area while on plane is so small that even the drag of a painted vs.bare waxed hull would be imperceptible. Finally, If I was going to try to improve the boat, I would remove all the bottom paint and try to restore the gelcoat finish instead-thereby adding to the value for resale.

how is the best way of refinishing the gelcoat. do you redo the whole boat or do you just redo the parts that are bottom painted? is there any other way of refinishing it?

If you are going to go through the time and effort, do the entire outer hull so that the colors match. If you hull is still in great shape, I would consider epoxy painting a nice double 1" water line stripe set with the hull bottom sprayed in shade of Desert Tan that is one notch or two darker. The contrast would be very appealing.
