1) want to know how the lid for the behind seat storage area on the 1986 super sport was fastened. Was it just loose or were there hinges? On mine, Its just loose & held on by gravity, but I've seen some pics that show various hardware holding it on. Which is the original configuration?

2) Need to know what brand/model was the original steering wheel on a 1967 sport 13' Was the SS 'Destroyer' type being used on 13 footers then?

3) Need to know what the lid to the front storage cover on a 1967 looked like. I've seen some 13's that had a single hole drilled into it, some with 2 holes on either end, and some with none. Does anyone know or have pics as to what the orignal was like? There were also two cross braces underneath, right? The drawings section didn't tell me for certain.

thanks in advance for any help.

Dan...

On my 67 the front cover has no holes. There are two 8 inch long, what can only be called handles on each side of the cover, maybe 2-3 inches from the sides.

I also have the original steering wheel...can't be sure if it's cast iron or stainless steel, but was painted white. hope this helps...I have pics...but not here or I'd scan and forward them along.

feel free to contact me and I'll get the pics to you...

For what its worth,

My 1966 hull has the same forward cover, no holes, two handles. There are no cross braces underneath. Steering wheel is painted white, I doubt it's stainless, probably cast iron. I don't see any markings on the wheel itself but there may be underneath the center hub, I'll post again if there are.

Hope this helps.

I inquired about the same a few months ago. If there are grooves in the short-side edges of the cover, there may have been a gasket-type of material in the grooves to make a friction fit with the sides of the locker.

You are correct about the front hatch cover. The two attached pieces of wood I thought were cross braces for underneath are indeed top handles.

The steering wheel on this 1968 sport is almost identical to the one on my 1986 super sport. its the stainless steel "destroyer' type (I believe thats what its called here) The only difference is that the center round piece is wood on the older model, and plastic ( I think) on the newer one.
thanks!

A little off topic but I thought I'd share.

My first Whaler was a '60's era 13'. One of the previous owners flipped over th forward hatch [putting the handles down] and cut a slot about 2" wide by 3" long rounded at the end. This slot, facing forward, allowed the excess bow line or anchor rope to be stored in the locker when in use as well as a means of lifting the hatch.

One added advantage having the handles down was having a fully flat hatch cover. Nothing to trip over or have to sit on...

Dan,

No, the stainless steel steering wheel did not come on a 1967 Sport 13 and did not become an option for that model until the early 1970's. At that time it was a five spoke design. The six spoke stainless steel wheels did not appear until the early 1980's.

I believe it was 1978 when the stainless steel wheel became standard on the Sport 13 instead of just being an extra cost option.

The front hatch on a 1967 Sport 13 would not have had the finger hole in it. Instead it had the two cross cleats on the top surface for use a finger grab. These hatches also had a compression gasket around the perimeter which was later superseded by a bungee cord to the bottom of the locker when the lid was redesigned with the finger hole in lieu of the "cross braces".

The wheel on my 1968 Sport is the 5 spoke stainless steel one. Maybe it's not original? Everything else on theboat looks original. Morse controls, stern light, side rails, etc.

Thanks for the input!

Dan
