I just purchased an '81 Montauk in fairly decent shape. The biggest concern I have is the rails are loose and have some play at the joints. Also, one of the screws into the hull and plywood of the bow rail is missing. What is the best way to tighten. I have heard of using rivets to fasten, is this okay.

Loose railing mounts are common on Montauks, WA.

There have been many threads on how to fix, and many solutions that work well.

Do a search on loose rails.

Does your Montauk have through hull fittings on the rails ? I've had my 82 Montauk 11 years. The pervious owner put the through hull fittings on in 1991 to secure the bow railings. The fittings are rectangular stainless steel/chrome plates on the outside of the hull which accept the rail side bracket screws from the inside of the hull. This application is only on the two railing side brackets on each side of the bow rail. They're not used on the rear side rails because the side brackets are higher up on the gunwhale within the area of the rubrail. I believe the previous owner probably used lock-tite or some similar application because I've never had problems with them coming lose. I believe this must help with the lower brackets ( I call them foot brackets at the foot of the rail) I check the fittings on my Montauk a couple of times a season and haven't had any major problems with loose rail screws. I have the packaging from the through hull fittings from the original owner, I believe they are original Whaler parts. the following is off the label with exception of the bar code:

Don't know if this will help of if they're still available.
