I'm trying to decide what the best solution is to the notched transom/steering problem on a 1977 11ft Sport. (as most of you know, the steering cable can't go through the tilt tube because it lines up with raised sides of the transom.

My 2 options seem to be:

1. set up the steering like Cetecea 57 did using a clamping block and I guess also a support tube. This seems like a good solution, but I'm worried the steering might be more sloppy using the bracket.

2. use a "mini-jacker" jacking plate to offset the engine back about 3 or 4 inches so the tilt tube could be used for steering. This supposedly provides better performance too, but I'm not thrilled about drilling into the transom.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Ryan's already got me leaning towards option #1. Thanks again to everybody for being so forthcoming with their advice!
