Author Topic:   Reconfig SSL to Montauk

This winter I will embark on a project to reconfigure my ’89 17 foot SSL into a Center Console rig, after looking at several boats in the Boston area I concluded that my Whaler hull was in much better shape than most boats of that age (1989) its equipped with a 90 hp ‘03 motor and the only thing I’m not fond of is the dual console and since I can’t seem to sell it, many time-wasting- tire kickers but no real offers, it makes sense to change the configuration of the hull. Cetacea P. 41: Rex Bettis restoration of his Montauk has been my incentive, it is a clean and simple rig, one I’ve admired for some time. Any advice, will and is appreciated, but let me start with the obvious; I need: Center consol, Seat, Rear Rails, if I can line these items up then I figure I got a good start. PS, FS center console set up for 17 ft Whaler.

Hey!? You calling me a tire kicker? :-)

Good idea Bossmas. In Boston harbor you really need a boat you can be driven when standing. Its no fun getting pounded and not being able to have your knees take a inpact. When I have two people in my 11 in choppy water the passenger will stand and hold on the a rope tied to the bow eye, mostley because its just to painfull to sit.

To turn your boat into a Montauk it will cost you alot of money. I remember reading about a guy who payed over a thousand bucks for a console, they are not cheap.

Have you looked into what your ssl interor is worth?
To the right person you should be able to get decent money for it. Its ideal seating for someone who boats on lakes. I'd look for someone with a 17'Bare hull who plans on useing it in a lake, like up in NH. Your seats are mint, they looked almost new to me.

Good luck,
Ryan.

Bosmass,

Just a couple of things, first, go for it! I was in a similar situation a while ago when I purchased my 1989 Newport. Loved the hull but just really didn't like the interior. I had been looking for a Montauk for quite a while but when I stumbled upon the Newport with a great price, I couldn't walk away. After doing a bunch of research on the forum and contacting whaler for advice, I just jumped in with both feet. After listening to some of the advice I was given, I decided to forgo the complete transformation from Newport to Montauk and stopped at Newtauk. I really like the extra storage the decking provides me. I'm glad I paided attention that day.

Once I made that decision, the rest was, well easy. The nice thing about doing this is you really get to see what kind of equipment you have. I pulled the console and sold it on ebay. Replaced the steering, upgraded all the electronics and ordered a console from whaler for about $600(including tax/shipping). My one regret is I should have ordered it with the cutouts. Since things are pretty much standard, I wouldn't of had any trouble finding doors for the openings...plus it would have been much easier and cleaner. I constructed my windshield from some plexiglass from home depot. I have a strip heater that I just used to heat the plastic and bent it around the console. No, it's not stock but for less than $10, I'll take it. I'm really curious how much that console is going to go for on ebay.

A few suggestions. I purchased my console rail from CMI for about $400. The Montauk bow and side rails will set you back about $1100. Now, what I would do is canabalize your current interior. I much prefer the sport rails(wrap around) over the Montauk rails. Since you already have them ( I think), you've just saved yourself $1100! (kind of how my wife justifies her shopping...saying she saved so much because it was...on sale) Now, I'm not sure if your current console rail/windshield will fit the new console but it's worth hanging onto until your new console arrives. I'd also pull the steering wheel and whatever useful thing on it before I put it on ebay.

I remember getting some comments about leaving it alone but since it was my project, I made it my own. You have a new engine, great hull and when you are finished, a new interior, all for a little bit of $ and a bunch of sweat equity. I don't see a down side to this!

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions...

DaveS

I appreciate the encouragement. I think I’ll end up with a hybrid. The bow rails on my SSL are in great shape they terminate into the dual console, it’s the set that goes from that section aft that I’m looking for. I repeat, the hull is in great shape and it gives me a solid foundation. I’ll check out your leads.

We, Red Sox Nation, are all cowboyed up for the NY series..
