I have a 1981 Johnson 100 HP Javelin and want to install a tach during my restoration of the 1967 Sakonnet it is on.I have a Clymer manual with wiring diagrams (mostly Greek to me but I can stumble around and find things) and the instructions for installation of tachs in their packages is remarkably sparse. I have not found a thread on this fantastic site. Any help will be appreciated. Bob on Tampa Bay

Robob,I am not sure which part of mounting a Tach that you are referring to but I assume it is the wiring... OMC designates these wire colors: (many other manufactures also) Purple goes to "S" for Switch. This is Key on Power Gray goes to "P" for Pulse from the electrical charging system Black is "G" for Ground Blue is "B" for Lights I would suggest purchasing an OMC Tachometer but others will work.. I am partial to staying with the engine brand obviously... If you owned a Mercury, I would say a Merc Tach etc. etc.... I hope this helps.... Joe |

Thank you.It gets me further down the road than I was yesterday:-) I'll have to dig around when I remove the console and see how much wiring is there. By the look of what I can see it's been cobbled over the years. Thanks again, Bob on Tampa Bay |

An OMC tach should have a 3 or 4 prong conector that just plugs into your control box or wiring harness. |

Bigshot,Hi neighbor:-) That sure would make life easier. Thanks for the advice. If there IS a control box or wiring harness. The wiring looks like it was a kind of an afterthought when some wood butcher last put in a new dashboard. For example, the temperature alarm is just hanging by a wire under the console. Thanks again, Bob on Tampa Bay |

Nick,Actually OMC sells 2 kinds of Tachometers... One with the wiring harness (Plug-In style) and one without the wiring harness (Non-Plug-In style)... Robob, Most all of the installations I have seen have had the alarm just hanging by the wires... This alarm is not heavy and should not be a problem just hanging around... Your Ignition harness may or may not have the Plug-In for the tachometer if someone has cut it off.... As Nick mentions, look for a 3 or 4 prong connector with the colors I mentioned above. If you do not see a connector, then look for just the wires coming out of your Ignition harness... Joe |
