I am interested in replacing the controls on my 80 Montauk/1990 Johnson 88 SPL. Any suggestions on a particular model/type? The main reason I want to change is that presently there is no way to give the motor additional throttle in neutral when I am starting it.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Are you certain? I have never seen a throttle that does not allow for more fuel in the neutral position.

What kind of control are you using?

Ozark,

I like to keep the controls the same as the engine manufacturer... Just the way I am... And OMC does make great controls as far as I am concerned...

OMC Engine = OMC Controls
Mercury Engine, Merc Controls
etc. etc...

Having said that, I would purchase a Single OMC Binnacle mount control on eBay... With or Without Trim & Tilt in the handle... I don't think your SPL has Trim & Tilt unless you added it... I added Trim & Tilt to my 1985 70hp Evinrude back in 1989... I also just added Trim & Tilt on a friend of mines 1977 Montauk with a 1979 70hp Evinrude... Really easy to do too..... You can buy the Trim & Tilt units on eBay also.... Just a matter of how much you want to spend and whether or not you want Trim & Tilt... It sure beats the heck out of raising the engine by hand... Especially an 88 or 90hp....

Now, if you also have a kicker motor, I would add a DUAL OMC Binnacle mount control on your console... This way you could control both motors from the Helm.... Just a thought... I did just this on my Outrage 18 and couldn't be happier... Here are some photos....

www.sisqtel.net/~jkriz/Outrage/outrage.html

Note: Some photos show the Single control and other photos show the Dual controls that I just installed....

I will be selling my Single Control sometime over the winter, but not just yet....

Good Luck and let us know what you do....

Joe

When I repowered with a new Merc I put on a Morse MT 2 control that I purchased on E bay for about $80.00. Whille it is used it operates like new. It has the advanced neutral built into the control for cold starts.

I had to have a separate Tilt and trim switch added which was no big deal.

I like the chrome look and function of the MT 2.

I have a used OMC control with advanced neutral and built in tilt and trim for sale if you are interested. It was on my 1988 Newtauk (Newport center console)

The control is a 9 out of 10. $100.00 free shipping

Ozark-

Can you identify the make and model of your current control? Or describe itso that maybe someone here can identify it? Like JayR, I'm wondering if maybe there's a function on your control you haven't discovered yet, or maybe one that is broken and can be relatively easily fixed.

Having said that, (and assuming that what you currently have is neither of the following), be aware that the control most frequently found on the older Montauks (OEM) was the Morse MT-2, now replaced by the Morse MT-3, which is a single lever binnacle mount all brass and chrome unit with a red round knob on the handle. They really look like they belong on a Montauk, but they do not have an integral tilt/trim switch so you have to add a separate one on your own.

I installed a Morse SL-3 on one of my Montauks, which is a black plastic single lever binnacle mount control with trim and tilt right in the control handle; it looked good and was very easy to operate. The cost of either of these controls new (retail) is about the same, about $300.00

On my OMC control the advanced neutral is engaged by pressing down on a square button on top of the control mount. This dis-engages the forward gear and allows the operator to advance the throttle in neutral.

Joe,
Looks like the top piece of wood on your RPS is oak? I'm currently dating a '79 Montauk, your rig is a nice setup, hopefully I'll get an 18 someday thats as good look'n as yours!

Sarge,

That one photo of the top of the RPS does make it look like Oak but I believe all the wood is Teak....

Anyway, I just sold my beloved 1978 Montauk that I have owned for 15 years.... Just couldn't see keeping both boats as we used our new Outrage 18 exclusively this year.. Here is a link to my prior Montauk:

Check for a button located either on top (square as mentioned above) or round and concentric to throttle/shift lever. Press button to disengage shift for neutral throttle. If no button then try simply pulling the lever out away from base... if it will pull out (one quarter to one half inch when in neutral) then try moving lever fwd while pulled out and this will give you neutral throttle.. simply moving lever back to neutral position will allow lever to "snap" back into normal position for operation of shift and throttle... check it out! Good luck .. Clark.. Spruce Creek Navy

Thanks for the replys from you all and sorry about being slow to respond to queries, as I have been turkey hunting.
Jay R:
I am using an OMC control, but I don't know if it is the original. Like you, I haven't seen one without a method of giving it the gas in neutral.

whalersman:

Yes, it does have the T/T. Thanks for the info and pictures.

John O:
I will remember your offer if a change is made. I don't want to continue as is. I may be overlooking something, but I sure can't come up with anything yet.
I checked again and there is no button on top of the handle, or anywhere else. All there is is the tilt/ trim tab on the side of the handle.

kingfish:

It is an OMC, but model unknown.

Clark Roberts:
No button and The handle cannot be pushed in or out.

I am going to try to reach the previous owner in Texas and see what he has to say. He may be able to solve my problem quickly--if so, I'll let you all know. Thanks for your efforts to help me.

Ozark,

It sounds like you have the OMC Single Binnacle mount engine control...
The handle on that control should pull out (away from the control) to stop the unit from going into gear... It sounds like it may be frozen so you can't pull it out...

Can you send me a photo????
If not, I can send you a photo of what I think you have....
Does it look like anything in the photos I listed???

What time is Turkey dinner???

when you used the Morse control, was there any issue with the neutral safety (no start) switch ?

Whalersman, (and others) I just got in touch with the former owner and he said,as some of you have stated, to pull the lever out sideways in neutral in order to give it the gas. I had tried that earlier, but it didn't want to cooperate, so now knowing what to do, I will shoot a short burst of silicone spray in there and that should do the trick.

Yes, I bagged two turkeys and ready now for a few of you to drop by to enjoy some good ole Ozark smoked turkey! Don't wait long,however--
