You'll probable have to buy new cable, as it's nearly impossible to work with older, stiffer cable; it won't stay on the spiral hub during installation. The cable is cheap. Note that the direction of the spirals are opposite; the top spirals one way and the bottom another, so that when you turn the wheel one cable gets longer while the other shortens and pulls the motor to one side. Thus, you must insert the cable ends into the holes on the spiral hub so that both ends of the cable are the same length. Then wrap one length around the spiral on the bottom only. At this point you will need to lock the steering wheel and then pull the wrapped-end cable around all your pullies and eventually around the spring pulleys at the starboard side of the motor, temporarilly fastening that end of the cable. You must fully turn the motor head to starboard for tightening. Now go back and make one wrap around the other end of the spiral hub with the other end of the cable, bring that end to the stern of the boat around all pulleys, and to the pully attached to the port side, around it to the spring pulley on the port side of the engine, and fasten. Tighten both ends by pulling so that the springs are about halfway stretched. It's a lot easier if you have a non-vocal helper. Good luck, it can be a frustrating experience!! |
