I am looking to replace the steering on my '80 Montauk with new Teleflex "No Feedback" system. I believe the current steering is rack and pinion. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to going to rotary. Also, what lenth steering cable will I need. I have a '92 Johnson 90
outboard. Thanks for any recommendations.

whaling away,

It is definitely not a Rack & Pinion system...

The Teleflex NFB (No Feedback) System is a good system... If you want an even better system, go for the Teleflex BayStar Hydraulic System...
I know it is more expensive, but if you intend on keeping your Montauk, it is a good investment..

Which model Teleflex do you have now... The Big-T or the Safe-T ???

The cable length for an Engine mounted directly on the transom can be either a 17' cable or an 18' cable on the Montauk.... Depending on how the rest of the rigging is coming out of the tunnel and around the splaswell and how you want it to look...
I have photos of both the 17' and 18' steering cable installation on different Montauks. If you are interested, I will send them to you...
