Hello-

I just had a big surprise bill! I just got off the phone with my outboard guy and he told me that I need to replace my swivel bracket on my outboard which will cost anywhere from $1000 to $1500 depending on if he used new or used parts. Are there any cheaper solutions? I am getting married in a month and can't afford this fix right now.

The engine is a 1995 150 Mercury. Please help; the mechanic is waiting on my response to repair it or not.

PL-
Those brackets are expensive. It is best to find one used if at all possible. I think if you can find one used, you'll be okay. It generally takes al ot of hard use to wear those things down. I am kind of surprised that your 1995 is going already. If you are located in the Boston area, I have a friend that owns a Mercury shop/marina on the North Shore, Portside Marine, Rob Leblanc (978-777-5727). He has a big inventory of used parts and a lot of knowledge. Try giving him a call. If nothing else, you may get a helpful second opinion. Good luck!

One other thing: You may want to buy the expensive part after all. If your fiancˇ still wants to marry you after spending that much on "the boat" then she truly is a keeper! Sorry couldn't resist!

Outrage, if the swivel (yoke) is hard to turn and steering is compromised try some heat and then try to regrease. Don't be timid with the torch. Let her rip and keep a firex handy. This may soften the hardened grease and free that baby up for a complete recovery! Repeat> use lots of heat! Happy Whalin'... Clark.. SCN

PL- I would also reccomend rob leblanc as I have used them many times for my merc parts. They have an up to date computer parts finder and will go the extra length to help you out.

There must be a gizillion of those intermediates around used. I have lost count on how many we have scraped. If you find one a fair price is about 2-3 bills. Sometimes you can find a complete blown motor for about the same price. I believe they used that mid-section for many models and years. Steve
