I have a 13' Sport with side railings. Is it better to mount ROD HOLDERS on the horizontal railing or the vertical posts?

The biggest problem with clamp on rod holders is they twist on the rail. So with that said, I put some rubber matting around the rail and then the clamp on the rail. I found the vertical rail to help keep them from twisting down at least.

I mount my rod holders on the horizontal rails, and I've discovered a two-sided carpet tape that prevents them from twisting if their brackets are snugged down tight enough. That twisting was a real problem for me at first, since I didn't want to tighten the brackets enough to damage the rails or the brackets themselves, and I was trolling up to forty-ounce lead balls in relatively rough seas. Wish I could remember the brand name of that tape. It's worked fine for the past six months, with an occasional tightening of the bracket nuts and bolts. I found the tape at a major chain hardware store.

I cut up old garden hose and slice into two making two U shaped pieces that I put under the clamps. I then tighten up until they touch, if the rod holder still turns then I trim. I like it set where I can hit the top of the holder with my palm and make it move a little. This way I can tilt them out for trolling and put back straight up for comming in to the docks so I don't smack folks standing on them. The hose also keeps from marring the railing with the metal clamps of the rod holders. Any rubber will probably work that is the least bit sticky. I just order some new plastic ones with slots for the spinning reel stand off from rod grip to reel. They were about $17.00 each and looked to be very high quality compared to most Ive seen. For the money I thought I would give them a try. If not subtatial enough to hold up to trolling I'll use them just to hold rods upright and off the deck and use the clamp on Perko's or Lee's for trolling.

I find that wrapping waterproof tape (electrician's, double-backed carpet, [SCOTCH 33+] etc.) around the rail before adding a rod holder base stops water from getting between the base and the rail. My Whaler was (and is) used in a saltwater environment and when I removed the previous owner's rod holders, there was noticeable pitting of the stainless steel.

Hi, I have 8 PERKO clamp on rod holders mounted on the side rails on my Montauk (4 per side). They are all mounted on the vertical rails and do not twist at all. You can adjust the angle and move them down enough to cover them with a full mooring cover. Brian

I used the horizontal rails...which give you more flexibility on where you place them...

Damage to rail is not an issue...my rail mount pole holders are homemade...used pvc pipe and cut in a "spiral" to lock in spinning rods...Mounting to rail is done with threaded plastic u-bolts...

Mounting tension is adjusted such that I can pivot them out (horizontal) or up and out of the way (vertically)...Very simple, very functional, very cheap...

Hi all! I'm a newcomer and new owner of a '84 15' Sport...I too am trying figure out where to put rod holders but it seems to me that putting them on the side rails obstructs cating and/ or fighting of fish...wouldn't it be better to have clamp-on holders on the rail of the seat back?

I have seen rod holders mounted just about everywhere on boats including the console grab rail. If the rail is strong enough to hold the type of fish you are after that's all that matters.

I wouldn't mount a 50 lb class rod on a rail trolling for tuna but it would be just fine for lighter tackle.

The nice thing about the clamp-on type is you can move them if the location doesn't suit you.

I take that back....I HAVE mounted one on a rail on a bareboat charter in the Bahamas, trolling for tuna.

No tuna but I did land a good size grouper...I did have a safety line on the reel though......and I mounted it on the vertical.

I have 5 of the Perko mounted on the Horizontal rails. I think they would probably work better verical for less slipping
They work, always use a saftey line on the reels. They do tend to slip....I have them tigh, but not enought to indent the rail as the directions says is normal. It is not normal to me to bend my rail. I have tried rubber tubing, tape, and a dielectric pad. All work some , but they still slip.
I have 2 rod holders installed in the fiberglass sides. I plan to add 2 more before fishing season.
If you have the money, buy the ones that fit the exact size of the rail. They cost more, but should hold. The Perko i have are made to fit several rail diameters.

Check these out. They do not slip on the rail. I have 80 lb class poles on mine and they work great. 4 bolts to hold them on with nylon inserts.

I took a 4' piece of parachute cord and made a loop in one end then tied a stainless steel halyard clip to the other.

Run it through the railing and hook the clip to one of the eyes on my trolling reel.

make it long enough to grab the rod to set the hook and fight a little.....at the first break in the action, unhook the clip and bring the fish in.........works almost every time.
