I just purchased a mid-80s Evinrude 9.9 to replace my Mariner 8 hp kicker (22 Revenge Cuddy). Isn't there some kind of carbueration change that will increase horsepower on this motor?

Ahoy, RSGwynn

There is a widely believed legend that the differences between the 9.9 and 15 JohnnyRudes of that series are limited to jets or carbs.

It is not correct. The differences are subtle but extensive and definitely not worth the expense of converting.

Except at high rpm the differences in performance between the 9.9 and the 15 are trivial.

Red sky at night. . .

There is a reason why sailboats run 9.9's instead of 15's.....more torque. You do not want to mess with the 9.9. If you do add a 15hp carb it will make it like a 12hp, not worth the effort. What you need is the sailboat prop to make it work as a kicker. I have one but not sure if I am gonna use mine for a kicker or not. They are about $70 new, try E-Bay.

Fine and dandy. Not worth the trouble, I suppose. Thanks, trusted guys.
