I would like any ideas on swim platform installation. I have a 1993 17' Montauk. The transom on either side of the motor is approximately 6" thick and is shaped in a curved fashion. The curve will not allow a nut to be tightned down flush to the transom.

There's "wood" (whaler board) actually in the port side
to take the factory swim platform. There's a not-very-good
picture at of how it attaches at http://www.garlic.com/~triblet/whaler/ .
The picture only sorta shows the upper brace on the outboard
side of the platform, and doesn't show the lower brace on
the inboard side of the platform at all. The factory used
big sheet metal screws into the whale board.

Thanks Chuck, you have a very informative article on rigging a Montauk. I use mine to dive and fish as well. I have considered using large sheet metal screws rather than trying to bolt the dive platform through the transom but did not know whether the sheet metal screws would hold. What method did you use on yours?

There is a stainless "T-Nut" blind fastener that adds a threaded insert to bolt the support to-I found it a Boat US.

Mine has big sheet metal screws. I would NOT try to through
bolt it. 1) the lower bolt can't be through bolted, 2) the
transom is thinner at the top.

I helped a buddy of mine throughbolt a ladder (different type) on his
M170's transom, and while it worked, I prefer the way
mine is. I did have a bolt pull out and had to enlarge and
fill the void with epoxy, then screw into the epoxy. But
that happened after a dive buddy, who weighs 240 in his
skivvys (not fat -- he does 100 mile bicycle rides -- just
BIG) climbed up with all his dive gear on (probably 320
pounds).

All, this past weekend I have tried and in process of installing a Detmar swim platform on my 84 18' Outrage.

Installing on the same side as Triblets, I through bolted the top right bracket, this is the one directly under the platform. Next I used 3/8x 2-in SS Hex Head bolts on the bottom right bracket. (Wood is located in this location)Note between the bracket and transom I used fender washers and 5200 series Caulk.

On the left bottom side I made a 1-in spacer machined out of nylon block, and a 3/8x 3-in SS Hex Head bolt .

Lastley in the upper left hand side grab rail, I have not bolted as yet. In my model, no whaler wood is located here just a thin area of fiberglass. I will be installing a threaded insert and/ or epoxy filling the area, then screwing into this using a SS Machine Screw.
