I am converting my 200HP 2002 Merc. from a 20" to a 25" shaft in order to use it on a 22' Outrage.

My mechanic said that he checked with merc and they have discontinued the aluminum "spacer" that goes on the exterior.

I want to use merc. parts in order to stay w/in my warrantyguidelines.

Anyone have any ideas as to where I can find this part??

I am quite surprised to hear that a 2002-model year engine is already obsoleted in 2003. I would ask another mechanic to make inquiry with Mercury Marine about this part. It does not sound like Mercury's usual practice to me.

I can still get parts for my 1976 Mercury engine, now 27 years old. I cannot imagine that a part less than a year old is now obsolete and no longer available.

I'll check on that. From what I understand it is part of a conversion kit and it was discontinued.

I'm just speculating here, but this mechanic could be right.

I know Mercury has a factory spacer kit for the 75-125 gearcase, because some of those engines are factory offered in 25" shaft length, and that is how they accomplish it. Same for the 3.0 liter engines to accomodate a 30" shaft length.

But for the 2.5 liter 135-200HP engines, a 30" shaft is not factroy available, and they have two one-piece mid-sections for the 20" and 25" models. So it could be this component no longer is used to extend a 2.5 liter engine?

I believe there is a reputable after-market supplier of this kit, however, which any Mercury Dealer could access. I think it's about a $600 cost.

Install a 8-10" setback manual jackplate for about $300 and you won't need to extend the shaft, plus you will go faster and draw 5" less draft.

Bigshot,
I had inquired about the jackplate on this site several months ago and the feedback was that the motor would be too low and would get dunked.

I looked into the extension kit that Bay Mfg. Milan Ohio sells and my extended warranty company said that it would be ok to use it.

Let me know your thoughts.

Bay Mfg was the place I was thinking of. I think they make a good product.
