I have been preparing my 1987 Montauk for a new E-TEC 90 (E90DSL) for the last few weeks, and as part of the project, I was preparing to move my battery from the usual starbord stern set-up to the console. When I finally removed the battery box, I noticed that even though it was strapped to the deck with eyelets, the battery box had worn the non-skid smooth in a few places. I thought I'd just post a word of warning to others with this set-up...take a few moments to place a thin rubber pad under the battery box to prevent wear on the non-skid. If you ever want to move the battery, you will be glad you did.--Rob--

Too late for me I'm afraid. Another thing to watch out for, nylon ty-wrap. The ty-wrap on my boat had really scratched the gel coat. It had work its way right to the bend in the cables on the starboard side. It amazing how much damage can be done by something like that. The fix is to simply put the wrap where it won't rub against the hull.Dave |

For years I have used a piece of cut-to-size "Dry-Deck", in almond color, under my Whaler battery boxes. It not only protects the boat gelcoat, but lets water run under it and compresses down a little under the tension of the strap, to firmly hold the box in place. |
