Now that I have my T-top off my 22 Outrage for the winter, I'm contemplating not replacing it in the spring - however, when the T-Top was put on, the original console rail was removed. I checked on a replacement from whaler and must say I amost choked on the price. This is for a standard console.I'm no on to plan B - trying to find the appropriate fittings (all the other rail fiting on the boat look pretty standard) and having the stainless tubing bent by a local fabricator. I'm hoping someone here can take some close-up photos of their standard console (I believe these are the same from a montauk up to a 25) with emphasis on the fittings where it attatches to the console and email them to me. I would also be greatful for whatever measurements you think would be relavant - I guess how far out the Shephard's crook extends would be one important detail; how far above the windshield the top railing is would be another. I've looked through cetacea and Tom Clark's catalog, but I couldn't find any shots with enough detail. My email is in my profile (not listed here to cut down on spam). Any other ideas in less expensive sources would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. David

Dave, I have an 82 Montauk with Standard Console with the railing ans shephards hook you are referring to, it's in my garage so I'll take some digital photo's and e-mail them to you, probably tomorrow, so I can turn on the lights open the garage door and get as much natural light as possible to take the photos.......I'll also make the measurements....talk to you soon....feel free to e-mail me....Pat |

Dave , the measurements for the shephard hook from the front of windshield to the inside of the shephards hook is 10.5 inches at greatest distance. The measurement from the top of the windshield (at front of console) to the bottom of the rail is 3.25 inches. I went ahead and took pictures (from stern to bow / bow to stern and port to starboard, etc) of the windshield rail and side fittings and shephards hook and the front fitting (bottom of Shephards hook on front of console). I'll have to wait for the computer Guru, AKA my wife to download pictures in A.M. so I can email them to you. Some of full photos may be obscured a little because of tools, etc hanging on garage wall in the background, but I took close-ups of the fittings which are good. Incidently the fittings which connect the railing to the side of the console are the same fittings used to secure the upright stanchons of the bow railings to the inside of the gunwale....I'll send the photo's tomorrow ASAP....good luckPat |

David, I have a set of console rail brackets off an older Montauk if you run into a bind. I don't think I have anything for the crook though. When you get your pictures if you can show me the ones you need I might be able to help. Andy |

You don't need the crook. They removed it in later model years. SOme like it and some hate it. I really don't like it but I never sit in front of the console so I realy don't care. |

David,The fittings used to secure the console rail are unique to Whaler. You cannot buy them off-the-shelf at West Marine. This is especially true of the Tee that holds the top of the shepherd's crook. It has especially long legs on it to resist the lateral bending forces that the shepherd's crook is subjected to when it is yanked. It must also be put on the tubing before the bends are made. These fittings are available from a Whaler dealer or CMI and they cost about $10 each. Used fittings are available from time to time. I may even have a few kicking around. The shepherd's crook itself is one of the greatest design elements on the classic center console Whaler. Unfortunately, a rail shop will have to have a bending jig with a 6" radius die to make that gentle smooth bend. Most shops do not have this size of die. Also be warned that the rails are slightly different sizes depending on what year console they were installed on. I do not think the first two versions of the standard console made from 1972 to 1982 have the same rail as the two later versions made from 1983 to 2002. I just happen to have a surplus console rail in my basement. I'll go down and measure it for you. |

Thank you to everyone for your offers of help. I'm looking forward to getting home to check my email.Tom, if you have any of the fittings kicking around you are willing to part with (or perhaps the rail), please let me know. Jay - I will keep you in mind if I decide to sell the T-top, though shipping it may be an issue. David |
