I just received my grey fuel tank mats for my 1974 Katama. The original red is no longer available :<( I have done a search and cannot find how to orient these mats. Do the ends with the 1/2" holes face forward or aft? I would have assumed that they faced aft to allow water to drain out, but then I thought maybe they face forward to "hold" any spilled gasoline.

Any help?

Hey Richard,

The mats were introduced when the fuel tanks were made of steel. It was important to keep the tanks from sitting in water for the obvious reason.....rust, so the mats were placed with the drain holes aft.

It is somewhat of a moot point if you are using a modern plastic tank.

...except to the extent that the mat has "shoulders" that may retain a little water (real little) because the deck is almost always lower towards the stern...
