I'm getting ready to reinstall my fuel tank-its 30 yrs old and shows no problems-the top has a few very minor pitted areas from oxidation, its 1/8" thick and judging by the pitting now it would take another 120 yrs to have eaten through. The sides ,bottom and all of the welds are flawless,I replaced the sending unit and buffed it up with a soft wire brush on a power drill-Question I had thought about spraying on a good layer of the spray on bedliner material before I foam it back into the cavity to help prevent any oxidation or corrosion, just wanted some feed back on that??It sounds great-the only down side is that if the liner ever came loose on it and the cavity ever did get some moisture it would probably work twice as hard against me??

It seems like coating it with something would preserve it better.

Bare aluminum on aircraft are primed with Zinc cromate primer. Don't know if you have ever used it but it looks like watered down greenish yellow see through paint.

I remembered that it really worked well to hold off corrosion. It used to come in spray cans but haven't seen any lately.

Jim, I just looked at a can of that today-considered that, just thought the rubber liner given that it adheres to the tank really well would also give it a little xtra vibration resistance??? not that it should vibrate? My understanding is that the zinc chromate works much in the same way as a zinc sacrifice anode - it will corrode before the aluminum. What I'm looking at is that with a rubber type coating you should stop any corrosion or electrolisis if there is no exposure to oxygen, salt water or other metals.I'm just wondering how well it will stick given proper prep.? The material I'm looking at using is made by plasticote. They make a dip it yourself type thing to coat the handles of tools and such and it works well.I think I'm going ahead and doing it ( I'll be the test dummy ) Maybe in another ten yrs I can let ya know if it works out. Tom
P.S. I was looking at your location on the map-I'd guess your about a 5 1/2 hr drive from me- I'd still like to get together when I finish the 21' that may be a while looking at the price of new motors, although my father asked me if I was going to have the boat ready this summer and I replied probably all but the power and he said maybe he would buy a motor just to have it done, he did'nt seem like he was joking-but my old man is so tight he whistles when he walks! how did the rod holders work out for ya??

I would call the company first to see if any prep work would be required before coating it. Aluminum does wierd corrosion tricks if not primed, powder coated or anodised in a salt water enviroment.

You are welcome anytime. If you can make it this summer we could hunt down some flounder in those bananas.

Haven't done the rod holders yet. I'm uncertain about how to set it up. To many ideas and I only want to cut the holes one time. I have saddle tanks that slide under the gunnels (20 gals each ) so I can't mount them in the rear gunnel. I will work it out.

Jim not sure how much fishing I'll get to do early this year got a baby due in May-I'll check with them and see that primer may or may not be a good thing I'll see what they say. And yeh no need to cut three holes for every rod holder :) I too often try to jump the gun on such things. Well its back to work for me!

Well so far so good- I buffed the tank with a wire brush then gave it a double coat of zinc chromate primer and then a couple of coats of spray on liner seems to have worked well- I did a test on some scrap aluminum and if you scratched really hard with your finger nail or something sharp you could get it off but I think it is sticking good enough that once foamed into place it should be fine since there will be nothing to scratch it?? I guess only time will tell if this is the right or wrong thing to do? to see pics of tank before and after go to the bottom of these pics
