How tough to really reverse engineer charging system on '87 90 OMC from rectifier/regulator back to straight rectifier?

No time or resource to replace R/R. Why not convert to rectifier. Have the part. No need to pull flywheel. R/R not used for many many years before the '80s.

86-87 90hp had two different R/R that were used depending upon if it had trim/tilt.Best to fix so you have a more uniform voltage for your other onboard electronics.GO AFTER MARKET partsto reduce costs.

Tuna 1, you must be right about regulator on '87 OMC, but if so how do we explain my '79 100 Evinrude with T@T but only a rctifier w/o a regulator?

Newer marine electronics need a more uniform voltage(those with microprocessors)

Tuna 1, do newer electronics include my threee year old Humminbird fishfinder? If so, would what would be the effect of the unregulated '79 OMC

Another alternative is to clean all the R/R wire connections in that little strip on stb side of engine. Suspect that's what got mine going.
