Can't find the old thread regarding the use of dowels in transom repair, and may not need to use dowels anyway. I may need to fill one eye-bolt hole on each side of my transom (1977 Outrage 19'), as I'm having trouble finding a matching replacement for the rusted out U-bolts I removed. If I fill these holes, don't I need something more substantial than an epoxy resin with hardening additive? Shouldn't I install some wooden dowels as well? I remember a prior discussion about the appropriate "grain" of wood on the dowels used, but can't remember the details. Can anyone help? Tom, I recall you were part of that discussion.

Try these articles, which I found with the SEARCH function:

Repairing Holes in Transom - Caution!

Repairing transom holes

Montauk Transom Repair

Filling bolts holes in Transom of 16'7 hull

It took me twenty times longer to type this reply than it did to locate the articles with the SEARCH function. I used the arguments "transom dowel grain epoxy" (without quotes).

FYI (so you won't think I'm lazy) I used the SEARCH function. I typed "Transom hole repair" and came up with 10 pages of threads, none of which resulted in the thread I was searching for. I realize now that "Dowel" would have been the buzzword.

Yes, it is weird how search results vary with the arguments. Sometimes you get too many results to be useful, and, other times, as you noted, just the inclusion of a key word makes all the difference.

Glad to hear you had already tried to find the article. I guess I was just lucky to hit it on the first attempt.

I was a bit grumpy, too, when I responded. :-(
