Morning Gents, I'm considering installing a pedestal seat in my 78 Montauk. Something like this one: http://www.sisqtel.net/~jkriz/drawings/pedestal-seat.jpg Does anybody here have this setup installed currently or on a past boat? Can you tell me how much weight this setup will hold? The last thing I want to do is damage my boat when I plop my 6'4" 275lbs on it the first time I go fishing. Also, has anybody rigged up a pedestal seat in the rear of their boat? If so, how did you do it? Thanks in advance! Sean |

I built one for my 15. the old one didn't last because the old owner rode on it while up on plane. the new one was built from quarterinch stainless steel plate w/ a 3" stainless pipe welded to it. i can get exact measurments if you want. don't know how much the old ones hold but mine would hold up the weight. I know that you can't get the old ones anymore because they are out of production. you can get one built. there is a picture of one here http://www.continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/ It is page 50 and the last two pictures on the page. Hope this helps. Joshua Walters Tightlines & Happy Whalin' |

WHALERBOY 14, Thanks for the info. If you wouldn't mind emailing me the measurements I sure would appreciate it. Great looking boat you have. Good looking hound also, I bet he gets big air with those ears! Sean |

Here are the measurements. The back bracket is 10" wide, 4 3/4"high, it is 1/4" stainless plate with a 3" pipe welded to it. the pipe is 7.5" high. In the anchor locker there is a plate which is 10" wide, 4 3/4" high and 1/4 inch thick. there is also a wood spacer between the bulkhead and the seat bracked. it is angled so it is too hard to get the measurements. A few years back I wanted to have a seat up front but didn't like the idea of having any additonal holes in the boat as well as the possiblity if skinning my shin against any new hardware. What I did was I removed the bow locker cover and traced it's outline on a piece of Plywood of the same thickness. I then routed the edges and drilled the holes to match the mounting holes of the original cover. I put a few coats of varnish on it, and as a cover it worked just as well as the previous one. I then mounted a seat base to it that would accept a seat or a pedestal. It worked fine, is very strong, and is impossible to have flip or open accidentally somehow. Since the new cover cost just a few dollars and was expendable, I also mounted an anchor mount on it so that the anchor is always handy and it's weight help keep the locker door from bouncing when underway. This way, i did not have to touch the structure of the boat at all in order to achive what I wanted. Good luck. |
