I'm starting to put the no feed back steering on my Montauk. Yesterday I got the cover off and removed the old steering which is a Big T system. I know the cable length I need but I have some concerns about the mounting of the new helm. One of our whaler brothers (sorry I forget who) had installed one for his buddy and had pictures of a spacer made of starboard. Is this to cover up the old holes? Is a spacer needed?. I don't know the minimum dash thickness that is required. Who ever had the picture I would love to see it again.

Buzz,

I just replaced the steering on my Katama. The no feedback system steering just bolted right into place. All I did was remove the steering wheel (no small task), unbolt the helm and bezel and re-install. If there was no spacer previously, I don't think you'll need one now. You will use the same holes to bolt the new helm and bezel.

Hope this helps.

Buzz,

I am the one......

You only need the space to cover up the old holes in actuality due to the fact that you are replacing a Big-T Helm. The spacer also makes the No Feedback helm look almost exactly like the Big-T helm when finished.

I still haven't gotten over to my friends house to get the final photos but all I did was cut an oval shape out of Black, 1" starboard, the same size as the base of the Big-T and of course it had to have the large hole to accomodate the mounting bracket...

I will email you a photo of what it looks like without the spacer installed and you can see that the original 4 holes will not be covered up..
