Any recommendations on an anchor for this boat. Will be primarily anchoring on the Charles River in Boston (no current, soft bottom) and occassionally off a beach on Cape Cod. I don't think a Danforth will fit in the bow locker. Any experience with a river or mushroom anchor out there? Thanks Hugh |

Try one of the Bruce style claw anchors. West and BoatUS sell them. I think the brand is Horizon. I use the 2.2 kilogram model on my 1972 13' and it fits in the bow compartment. It is all you will need for your 13' in anything but storm conditions. I recommend 3' of 3/16" chain but it is not required unless you have an abrasion problem (coral, etc.). |

I used a folding anchor for my 13. The Danforth is the best anchor but it will not fit in the bow locker. Whenever I needed a good anchor I always put a larger Danforth in a crate in the back of the boat. But for non-critical use I used one like this one pictured at the bottom of this webpage. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&categoryId=450&langId=-1&subdeptNum=11206&storeNum=5 |

I have a 69 13' and I gto a friend to make mine. It doesnt fit in the bow locker or anything but you can anchor anywhere. Yes I mean anywhere(to an extent). If you can weld get a 15-20" peice stainless steel about 1" diameter and 5 ss pieces of rods segments. Then weld together. There ahsnt been one time I couldnt hold and I have been in current that could dorwned somebody. I think you might be able to buy this somewhere I remeber seeing it but dont know where. |

Here is the link for the Simpson claw anchor -not Horizon as I mistakenly stated in my first repy– I use on my 13 Whaler. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=12540&catalogId=10001&classNum=212&subdeptNum=11206&storeNum=5 The 4.4 pound model is all you need for a 13 Whaler. Folding anchors and grapples are not trustworthy and one would be ill-advised to anchor near surf with either type. |
