As the 1981 Montauk I just purchased has very little dry storage, I am wanting to replace the rear slatted seat with a pair of coolers with upholstered padded tops. I have seen this done, but the only known occurance was at a boat yard and I really didn't have the time to take notes.

Has anyone done this with a 17' Montauk and can you give me any tips, or trouble shooting advice before I do irreprable harm to my little gem?

What is the rear seat made of? Are you planning to sell it?

The seat is made of wooden slats and I currently do not have any plans to sell it. Are you looking for a rear seat?

Joe -

I recall in a forum thread discussing rear seats, one member stated he had a large cooler with cushions. It may have been a 100 qt. Recall there was also a link to a photo.

If you do a search for rear seat, I think you can find it.

Can't remember exactly when and can't find it....but I remember a thread recenly where someone got an extra set of cooler chocks and mounted them aft for a cooler seat/dry storage in front of engine. I've been thinking the same thing, and the possibility of two smaller coolers for port and starboard seats or one big one for center front of engine.....

Personally check andsee what she gets for igloo 120 or larger cooler cushions. Then go to Sam's or wherever and get a white Igloo 120+ qt cooler and VIOLA!
