I have a 1980 17 foot montauk. I am interested in bow mounting a trolling motor. I have the opportunity to buy a riptide 55 lb. thrust motor that a friend had mounted on the stern of his flats boat. I would, of course, need a new mounting bracket. Does anyone have experience with this, will a 55 lb. thrust motor move my boat? Should I put the battery in the anchor locker. Do I need to be carefull where I put the bolts? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Howdy, GreadyanneIII.Yes, 55lb thrust will move a Montauk very well. I have a Genesis 55AP on my Montauk. Good luck finding a proper bow mount to convert. When you are ready I can send you pix of both AP and Genesis installations on a Montauk bow. Red sky at night. . . JB |

Does the floor of the anchor locker have enough flat area to set the battery evenly onto? I would not but the battery in the anchor locker unless it sat evenly on a flat deck area. |

I installed a bow mount trolling motor on my 99 Montauk and the battery in the bow locker. There is no problem with either. There is plenty of support under the bow step pads to mount the motor and the battery, a group 27 deep cycle, mounts well in the aft portion of the anchor locker. The anchor locker does not have enough depth for the lid on the battery box but I can see no reason why one would be needed anyway. Dick |

I have a 1981 Montauk with a bow mount motor. The power is run to the main battery inside the primary battery compartment. The motor is connected with via an outlet and plug through the side wall of the battery compartment. The only problem I have encountered is corrosion on the pigtail extension I had to wire to the motor to reach the plug. Otherwise, tidy, neat, and it can be unplugged and wrapped around the motor when not in use. No cord to trip on. |

Battery compartment?? Where is that, Joe?My 1980 Montauk has no such critter. My battery used to reside in the starboard stern, now it lives in the console. Battery in the anchor locker?? Just the weight (about 75#) of the Minn Kota Genesis holds the bow down so much that I had to go down an inch on the prop to get WOT to 5800rpm. I shudder to think of the boat trim with that big battery up front as well. Red sky at night. . . JB
