I have a 1995 Rage 15 with a 115 hp OMC Jet Drive. The engine runs great when it is warmed up and even idles well. However, I have a very difficult time getting the engine to start.

The battery is good and it cranks just fine, it just takes a long time to get it to start up. I have tried cranking it at low throttle, full throttle, and in between. When it starts to run, it is for short spurts, which get longer as I continue trying to get it running. It also smokes a lot during the process. It is also very hard to restart even after being warmed up and run for a while.

Can any one offer some help?

Thanks,

David Irish

David-
Thanks for clarification. You may want to look at the least expensive things first.
Spark plugs, they sound as if they may be fouled.Has the carb been decarbed with spray-tune??Has the fuel filter been changed recently?? I would look at the vacuum lines, and the fuel lines to see if there is any splitting, or undue wear. The next thing I would look to is the vro pump, to see if that is working ok. Those were the main probs I had with my Rage when starting was a problem...Good luck.

dwirish,
Just to make sure, are you priming the fuel line first and do you reprime after failed starting attemps. I have found this to be a problem occasionally. Mine has always started easily (knock on fiberglass). Do you continue to choke it as it is first running (pushing in the key)this is ussually needed.
As far as smoking this is a normal operation for this motor as long as it is blue smoke. If it is then the VRO is working. Next thought is to clean carb or rebuild. Also is the gas good I did have this condition for a while until I filled up with a new tank of gas. I made the mistake of buying gas at a brand new gas station and this problem persisted until I refilled(20gal.) Other than that do as WHALER27CC said.

good luck
