I am repowering my 1976 Montauk. It currently has a 1975 75 hp Johnson Stinger with a long shaft. Do I need to replace with a long shaft? What's the advantage/downside?

Most often when people refer to shaft length with the term "long" they are talking about a 20-inch shaft length engine.

As given in the Reference Section, the transom height of a Montauk 17 is 20-inches.

The advantage of using an engine with a 20-inch shaft is that it fits properly on a 1976 Montauk The disadvantage of using an engine that is too long or too short is that it does not fit properly.
