The former owner had my 1981 Johnson 100 HP V4 professionally rebuilt including the lower unit in 2002. He seldom used it. I have had it since March of 03. I run it every week with fresh water earmuffs if I can't get out on Tampa Bay. When run in the salt, I always flush it immediately after it goes in the davits. The telltale squirts just fine and the engine starts well and runs strong. I intend to change lower unit lube this month. Is it necessary to change the impeller since the engine is well taken care of and does not sit for long periods of time? From reading your posts I know there is a wealth of valuable experience out there. Thanks in advance, Bob on Tampa Bay |

I have always changed impellers every three years. When I purchase a used boat and motor I always replace the impeller to reassure myself. This is regardless of what the previous owner says. I've learned over the years some people will tell you just about anything to close the deal. Its a relatively inexpensive part and not too complicated to change, so why take the chance of causing major damage to your motor? Just my opinion. |

I agree, I just bought a boat and I had my mechanic change the water pump while he was looking it over (compression etc) |

I appreciate the advice. I have the detailed local repair shop bills and feel confident that the work was done so am not concerned on that score. I may go ahead and do it anyway. It seems pretty straighforward in the Clymer shop manual I have. Any problems with the procedure? I used to tear apart automobiles, inboard engines and motorcycles but have no outboard experience. This post of mine is a semi-parallel topic - along with a link to a post from our host and his not-so-good experience. www.continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/005911.html I'm getting ready to do (at least) the same thing myself. |
