Greetings all- I live in the Northeast and have not been on my boat in several months. This moring in noticed oil dripping from my prop. I have a sterndrive and winterized the engine properly and ASSUMED my father-in-law was going to take care of the lower unit as he said he would. However- as you guessed he did not. He told me he didn't drain the oil from the lower unit- and since we had a brutal winter was wondering if something VERY BAD has happened. I have some thoughts on what has happened but would like to get your feedback with possible solutions to the problem (if it is indeed a problem) Thanks

You might have had some water in there and it froze, hopefully it's just a seal, it could be fogging oil leaking out of the exhaust also.

Worst case scenario? it cracked the lower unit.
good luck

You seem to be confident that the oil that has appeared is coming from the lower unit, not the engine exhaust. If that is true, you probably have a rear propeller shaft seal leak. This should be repaired.

As mentioned above, be careful not to confuse some exhaust residue with lower unit lubricant.

Thanks for your input- that was my guess- that the prop seal gave out- I don't think there was any water intrusion as the oil looks as though it just came out of the can (so to speak)- not foamy or milky. It is leaking right around the collar of the prop. Is this a tough job- I've pulled the entire stern drive off before to replace a torn shaft bellow--- any other maint I should do while the lower unit is off. Thanks guys- Happy Whalin'

Bellows can be a walk in the park compared to a shaft seal. Depends on if your collar ring want to come out or not.

will i have to remove te entire lower unit- or simple pull the prop and get at it from there?

Do you have any advise on pulling the collar ring out? I have had a puller on it for 2 days with PB Blaster and heat off and on and it is stuck. Any other suggestions that you or any body else might have are more than welcome.
Thanks, Bobby
