The stern locker on my 1975 Sport-11 fills up with water every time I leave it uncovered in the rain. It costs me five minuets bailing and sponging it out every time I leave it out. Its been like this every since I've owned the boat. The guy who owned it before me had it at his cottage with a sand beach and little kids, I suspect his kids filled it with sand and the drain got blocked up. Their is a small hole at the bottom of it, I've tried to free it up with an ice pick, but I had no luck.

Where should this water drain to?
Can I get it to drain, it is it blocked up for good?

This is the rear well I'm talking about:

Ryan, Why don't you unclog the drain?

Ryan:

Use a wire to follow the route from the stern box to the main drain...

Joe,
It I could "unclog the drain" I wouldn't have posted this.

rbruce,
What kind of wire? I tryed with a ice pick and hit something solid less then 1/2 a inch down.

Does it drain out threw the stern plug or the one on the bottom of the boat? Does it go down and turn, or does it go straight down into the drain?

the rear locker on our 11 footer drains out onto the floor of the cockpit via a small 3/4" outlet hole next to the main drain plug. It's a kinda of crude looking hole but seems to works OK- it just bubbles away while deraining the seat locker. Not sure how the passageway is constructed- whether it's a tube or channel.
good luck

Try using a piece of solid bare soft copper wire to clear the drain. Copper wire will be pliable enough to easily bend to the channel of the drain, but it will be hard enough to remove any sand or other impacted material.

My 1980 vintage 11 foot Whaler, Georges has a rear locker with a regular drain in the bottom. So, no auger is necessary. Georges is not impacted by this problem at all. The bow locker on the other hand is another story. JimB

The drain in my 11 footer just goes thru the foam-no lining or tube, after trying to keep it clean for years(and tearing out a lot of foam), I gave up and filled the locker w/ foam and permanently secured the lid w/ 5200. I don't miss the storage space, since it was always filled w/ water! Whaler should have put a real drain here, not a weep hole, If you need the locker, you should fit a drain tube, as this is a great place to get water into the foam.

Roger, surely your boat was just missing the tube. I can't believe Whaler would design a boat that purposely drained water into the foam.

Ryan, use a plumbers or electicians snake home depot sell a plumbers snake for about 8.00. its about thirty feet long ;remember to cuchion the end of the snake so you wont damage the drain tube. Then blow some air thru it from an air pump. After this use the snkae to clean your gutters and leaders on your dads house so HE wont have to do it.STRIPER.
