I am getting ready to replace the oil seals (prop shaft) on my 1978 Mercury 900. This is the first time I have attempted this job. I noticed that there is a part called a thrust hub that appears to be pressed on the shaft. Is there a special tool for removing this hub? The hub does not appear to be corroded.

Thank you,

Jeff

There is a thrust washer behind the prop that fits the tapered portion of the prop shaft. Tapping it with a brass or plastic mallet will usually loosen it enough to pull it off with your fingers. It is not threaded to the shaft, but just a tapered fit. Avoid using anything to pry it off using the edges of the gearcase as a fulcrum. It is too easy to damage the gearcase's soft aluminum edges.
