I recently purchased a '96 21' Outrage. I noticed that one of the bow rail bases was pulled up. I discovered that the screws attaching the rail base to the gunnel were stripped. My first attempt to repair was to mix epoxy, fill the holes. Once cured, I drilled small pilot holes and attempted to reinstall the screws. The hole stripped right back out. Would it be better to redrill and insert oak dowels and then attempt reattachment?

The key is to drill out the original hole with a larger bit, at least 1/2" or more. Then fill with Marine Tex epoxy which has filler blended in. Then drill out a pilot hole the diameter of the screw shank, or slightly smaller, and install new self tapping stainless screws. Doing this will still leave a good sized ring of MarineTex in the hole to hold the screw in place. This method will make a long lasting permanent repair. BillS
