I will be installing a 60 merc four stroke on my Montauk. The bottom holes end up below the spashwell when I mount it all the way down. I would rather not use lag screws or a jackplate. If I move this motor up a couple of notches it looks like I could use bolts. Does anybody know how far up I could mount this motor. I dont want to have any cooling or handling problems. Does any body have a simular setup? Thanks, Wade

Wade, I have the 60hp motor on a 15ft classic. General consensus about mounting height is that you can usually get away with mounting the cavitation plate (large horizontal plate just above prop) 1 to 1 1/2" above the keel line (the lowest line of the hull taken back from the keel-use a 4ft or greater straight edge). A jack plate however can be had for less than 2-300 dollars and allows more flexibility for only a small weight penalty. Hen |
