I have a 2005 Yamaha 70 hp 2 stroke with oil injection. I have not had any problems with this motor thus far. The other night I started it and it smoked terribly and the exhaust smelled strange, which I assume was because it was burning way too much oil. I had used the motor about 3 days earlier and had no problems. Docked it and stored the motor tilted up with the gas line attached, like I usually do.

I started it and it began smoking pretty much immediately and was running rough. Noticed that when I put the motor down there was a small slick of gas or oil on the water behind the boat. I proceeded to leave the dock and it was still running rough and smoking, approx 10 minutes later. The fuel tank that it was drawing off of had fuel but it was low, I switched tanks and at about that time it started running better and stopped smoking. I don't know if it was the tank or if it just worked itself out. Haven't had a lot of rain and my tanks seem to be clean. Anyone had this happen, any thoughts on what happened?

Don't know if there is any connection between the near empty condition of your tank and this or not, but I can tell you that with A VRO oil injection system, if there are *any* air leaks in fuel lines (cracks, loose fittings, etc.) the oil injection system thinks there is more gas being run through the system than there really is and consequenty ups the amount of oil it injects, resulting in smoke, fouled plugs, etc.
