Are there any special precautions re using ether spray starting fluid in outboards versus other applications? Thanks, ron

Yes, ether is especially hard on two stroke motors. Two strokes use their fuel for lubrication. You are using the ether as a substitute for fuel, the only problem is ether is a solvent and will actually wash off any residual oil on the bearings and cylinder walls enroute to the combustion chamber. The result is enough wear on one start with equal may equal 50 dry starts (a guess as to the exact number)with mixed fuel in terms of bearing and ring wear.

Using ether on a regular basis will kill your engine very quickly
