I just completed the installation of a rub rail. Using a heat gun to insert the "rub" part of the rub rail system made the job much easier. Years ago I installed a rub rail on a Sport 15 without using auxiliary heat and it was a slow process. With the heater, you can do the job single handed, working on 4-6 inches at a time. A rubber mallet came in handy as I developed a technique of:1. pre-aligning the 'rub'
2. applying heat for 10-20 seconds
3. squeezing or pinching the 'rub' to allow the inside rails to "catch"
4. Tapping that section of the 'rub' to flatten it ( with the rubber mallet) as it expands into the 'rail' portion.
One issue remains and that is how to finish the stern. I replicated what was there before which I believe to be a factory installation. ContinuousRub - sorry jimh. I don't like the look and I'm thinking of removing the 'rub' on the transom, cutting it to align with the 'rail' mitre angle and finding a way to bond or "weld" the ends of the 'rub' on each stern quarter.
Has this been done successfully elsewhere?
