My 1983 Sport 17's getting a nice 90 hp E-Tec. The old Suzuki is gone and the boat is sitting in my driveway with 4 bare mounting holes unblocked. One of the holes (lower right) has a little rusty looking dampness in it. The transom is strong and solid even around the holes.

Two questions:
1. Do I have to worry about the rusty one?
2. Do you recommend and special treatment inside the 4 transom mounting holes prior to mounting the motor?

Thanks for the help!

Dave

You could treat the exposed wood endgrain inside the holes with penetrating epoxy sealer. That would keep future water intrusion to a minimum. Two coats should do it. Since it might raise the wood grain a bit, re-drill the holes after it cures with the correct sized bit. Also, the wood needs to be dry before applying the epoxy. Don't use 3M 5200 or you'll have a very difficult time if you want to get the bolts out again. BillS
