I need to wire up a non-Yamaha tachometer. Exactly what are the functions of the four coloured wires? I'm technical so I should understand!

Thanks

Dave

ASIDE: Does anyone have the manual for a Yamaha 703 remote control?

The usual wiring to a tachometer will have:

--switched +12 that follows ignition switch on engine so has voltage in RUN and START positions;

--battery negative or common;

--tachometer pulses from engine;

--gauge illumination.

The wiring color codes are somewhat standard for this, at least with outboard engines manufactured in America. I don't know what the Yamaha color code might be. I will go use GOOGLE.COM now to search for this, as I think it will be a good addition to my REFERENCE article on color codes. See:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/wireColorCode.html

If Yahama follows the usual color codes that would be:

--switched +12 that follows ignition switch on engine so has voltage in RUN and START positions; VIOLET

--battery negative or common; BLACK

--tachometer pulses from engine; GRAY

--gauge illumination. BLUE

But that is just speculation. I'll be back if I find more accurate data.

I found some information, not absolutely authoritative, that Yamaha uses some different colors:

GREEN = Tachometer Sender

YELLOW = 12-volts from IGNITION KEY

I did some more searching and found this citation:

DARK GREEN = Tachometer Sender

YELLOW = 12-volts from Ignition Key

BLUE = gauge illumination (hey they got that right)

BLACK = battery negative

GRAY = overheat alarm

Again, this is not authoritative.

Jim,

You last post or the one above this is correct except there is no gray wire in the 703 power harness from the Yamaha 703 control.

Dave.......send me an email to parts@shipyardisland.com and I will reply to that and attach the 703 control installation book from Yamaha.

I should have said what the colours were, sorry. They are black, yellow, green and red. What do you think ? The engine is a 1998 25hp 4 stroke Yamaha on a friends very nice 13 Sport with lovely restored wood. My 15' SSL is going great with a 30hp injected Mercury.

Thanks

Dave

Andy--Send me a copy and I'll include the wiring code information in the REFERENCE section. I would much prefer to get it from an authoritative source like the factory manual.

Dave,

Follow Jims last thread. That info is correct. I also got your email and sent you the 703 info.

Jim,

Will do on your request.
