The Cetol is very forgiving, but does not flow like regular varnish. If the surface is freshly done, you can dull it with a scotchbrite pad, which will remove any highspots and dirt in the finish. If you want a more varnishlike smooth finish, like I do, I wet sand with various grades of sandpaper, mainly 320. Be careful, as you can sand through edges easily. I have my finish pretty smooth by doing this prep. Wipe down with some denatured alcohol and then a tack rag and its ready to apply. I apply the clear gloss with a good quality brush, NOT a foam brush, for best results. I put 3 coats of gloss on, mainly because I sanded down aggressively to remove the grain to get the smooth varnish look. If you don't give the finish time to cure, it will be hard to sand as it gums up the paper. I usually apply one coat over another and them let it dry good for a few days before an actual sanding for the top coat. The stuff just doesn't flow though like varnish so don't work it too much with the brush and let it level out on its own. I'm on my second year with the finish and am very happy. I used the clear gloss only and it looks like varnish, but with easier upkeep. This is coming from a seasoned boatkeeper who has professionally maintained boats for over 20 years. Cetol is a good compromise if you want to use your boat and like teak. |
