My neighbor is moving and he asked me if i'd like the boat thats been sitting under a tarp in his back yard since i moved here. turns out it is a 1972 13 ft whaler. me and my kids moved it today, flipped it over and began to try and clean bottom with a fiberglass restorer (3m product which i use annually on my grady).

it appears that they might have refinished the bottom, not with a bottom paint , but a very smooth paint like surface which is clearly darker than original clearcoat. i began wet sanding with a 80 grade paper but i fear this will take forever.

any suggestions on how i might strip this layer without damaging original clearcoat. willing to work hard, but want to work smart.

Congratupations on your new boat! If you could post a picture somewhere so that we could see the boat then we could offer meaningful advice as to how you might want to proceed.

You mention the "original clearcoat." Boston Whalers do not have a clear coat, just gelcoat on top of the fiberglass.

It sounds like someone may have painted the boat. Why are you removing the paint? Are you planning on re-painting or re-gelcoating? Why not just use the boat as it is?
