I have not run this motor yet but looking at it I have discovered the following;

There is a retaining ring not in place at the lower end of the steering tube. It is just hooked around the shift shaft above the lower motor mount.
Do I have to remove the power head to put this back in? Or, can it be snapped back in from the bottom.
If I have to take the mounts out I might as well replace them as they seem soft now .
If I put in solid motor mounts (which I can make instead of buy the rubber ones) will it make a big difference in the smoothness of operation.
And should I should I replace the lower crankshaft seal then too?

Anything else while I'm in there?
Thanks,
Len

Does it affect the way it works? Sometimes they break from corrosion but are fused together. Yes solid mounts help because Mercs shake a LOT but it will make your boat vibrate at low speeds. If you do have to remove powerhead, buy a new lower seal when you buy the base gasket.
