My Whaler has a Yamaha 90 with the 704 control unit. How can the tension on it be adjusted? How can it be lubricated and serviced?

It has an orange rubber plug set into the top, presumalby for some lube, but nothing in any of the books tells what sort of lube.

Any ideas?

Thanks - Bill

Details of the disassembly and service of the Yamaha 704 Remote Control is probably given in an associated Yamaha service manual. You may be able to get one from your dealer or find it on-line at the Yamaha website.

Don't recall an orange plug on mine but I'm going to go ahead a quote from a few manuals here and not from experience.

Throttle Friction Adjuster - It looks to be a single screw on the outside (on the front of the case, in direction of WOT). To increase resistance turn adjuster clockwise. To decrease resistance turn counterclockwise. Also, warning not to over-tighten or it could be too difficult to move throttle possibly resulting in an accident.

In order to lube you have disassemble. Manual says to lubricate contact surfaces of all moving parts with Yamalube all purpose Marine grease.

Hope this helps a bit. Maybe someone else has some real world experience with this.
