I'm refinishing the woodwork on my 1966 13-foot side console Whaler. The console appears to be original, and I suspect that it shipped from the factory with (brown) paint on the hidden surfaces. My restoration work has necessitated complete disassembly of the console, and I've sanded everything down to bare wood. Since I'm already in a varnishing mode, should I varnish the hidden surfaces or was it painted for a good reason? When finishing wood I've always felt that both sides should be treated them same, to prevent unequal moisture changes in the wood.
